The building
Designed for Mott Haven, not dropped into it
The Astelle opened in 2025 at 286 Rider Avenue, in the southwest corner of the South Bronx. Eight stories and 124 residences meet the street through oversized windows, stepped balconies, and considered proportions.
The neighborhood is the historic Piano District, where Mott Haven once held the densest concentration of piano factories in the country. The big windows and industrial proportions those factories left behind still define these streets. The Astelle responds to that scale so the building belongs to the block instead of standing apart from it.
Inside, the residences are built to a current standard rather than a renovated one: open kitchens with stainless appliances, full bathrooms in warm tile or grey mosaic, generous closets, and large windows, many with a private balcony framing the Bronx skyline. A 24-hour fitness center, gated on-site parking, and a rooftop with grills are documented in full on the amenities page. A refreshed lobby by the interior-design studio Saguez & Dash is in the works, so the arrival will feel as considered as the residences upstairs.
