The picture

One river crossing, several good options

Mott Haven sits just across the Harlem River from Manhattan, which is why the commute is shorter than the borough's reputation suggests. Most residents lean on the 6 train, but the 4 and 5 express, Metro-North, a bike, or a car each make sense depending on where you are headed. Below, we lay out the subway times to four common Manhattan destinations, then cover bike and car. Subway times are approximate and off-peak; real-time trips vary with service.

Subway times to Manhattan

The 6 train is the workhorse. From 3 Av-138 St it runs local down the East Side of Manhattan, so it is a one-seat ride to Grand Central and the Upper East Side, with transfers from there to the rest of the city. The 4 and 5 express, from 138 St-Grand Concourse, are faster to Lower Manhattan. The table below shows approximate, off-peak travel times.

By bike

Biking and the Randalls Island Connector

A bike is a genuine option from Mott Haven, not just a weekend one. The Randalls Island Connector, a dedicated pedestrian and bike path, links the neighborhood to Randalls Island, and from there to Manhattan via the footbridges. For destinations in East Harlem and the Upper East Side, biking can rival the subway.3

Citi Bike has expanded across the South Bronx, so a docked bike-share trip into Manhattan is realistic for shorter rides. Combine a bike with the subway for the last leg when the weather or the distance calls for it.

By car

Driving and the bridges

If you drive, Mott Haven is well connected: the Third Avenue Bridge, the Madison Avenue Bridge, and the Willis Avenue Bridge cross the Harlem River directly into Upper Manhattan, and the Major Deegan Expressway (I-87) and the Bruckner Expressway meet nearby for trips farther out. Traffic at the bridges is the usual rush-hour constraint, which is why most residents keep the 6 train as their default. The Astelle offers on-site enclosed parking for residents who drive.
